Ram’s Electric Truck Plan: What “Range-Extended” Actually Means

2026 RAM 1500 REV Exterior

If you’ve searched for the Ram 1500 REV lately, you’ve probably seen a confusing mix of terms—“range-extended,” “Ramcharger,” “EREV/REEV,” and even older pages that still describe a battery-only Ram EV. You’re not alone. Ram’s naming evolved, and the internet has been playing catch-up ever since.

Let’s clear it up in plain English: Ram’s current 1500 REV page describes the truck as a “range-extended” electric pickup, and that phrase means something very specific.¹

The quick answer: “Range-extended” is still electric… with a built-in backup power source

A range-extended electric vehicle (often shortened to EREV or REEV) is an electric vehicle first:

  • The wheels are driven by electric motors
  • A battery powers the truck
  • A gas engine is on board to generate electricity when needed (via an onboard generator)

A simple way to picture it: an EV with a built-in power source to extend total range—so you can keep moving even when you’re far from a convenient charge.

What Ram means by “range-extended” on the 1500 REV

On Ram’s current 1500 REV page, the brand highlights the setup behind the “range-extended” description: a liquid-cooled 92-kWh battery paired with an onboard 130-kW generator, powered by a 3.6L Pentastar® V6

Ram also promotes major capability targets, including:

  • Projected total driving range: 690 miles¹
  • Max towing: up to 14,000 lbs (when properly equipped)¹
  • Max payload: up to 2,625 lbs¹

Important note: Those are manufacturer projections/targets, and real-world results can vary based on conditions like speed, weather, terrain, payload, towing, and driving style.¹ Preproduction models are shown in Ram’s materials, and the production version may differ.¹

Why the name confusion happened: REV vs. Ramcharger

Here’s the part that created all the Q&A online:

Originally, there were two different trucks

  1. Ram 1500 REV = the battery-electric pickup (BEV) described in earlier releases and on at least one Ram page, including range targets like 350 miles (standard) and up to 500 miles (with a larger pack).³ ⁴
  2. Ram 1500 Ramcharger = the range-extended electric pickup (EREV/REEV), using a gas engine to power an onboard generator for longer total range.¹

Then, Stellantis changed the plan—and the name

In a September 12, 2025 statement, Stellantis said it would discontinue development of the full-size BEV pickup and rename the REEV-powered pickup to “Ram 1500 REV” (formerly Ramcharger).²

That single shift explains why you’ll still find older references to:

  • a battery-only “REV” with big battery-range numbers, and
  • a “Ramcharger” that sounds like it should be the EV one

Today, Ram’s current 1500 REV messaging is built around the range-extended setup.¹ ²

So… is the 1500 REV an EV or a hybrid?

A range-extended EV sits in its own lane—somewhere between “pure EV” and “classic hybrid.”

It’s EV-like because:

  • It’s designed around electric propulsion
  • It can still be treated like an EV for many day-to-day miles (plug in and drive on electric power)¹

It’s different from a typical hybrid because:

  • In the range-extended approach Ram describes, the V6’s key job is generating electricity via the onboard generator to help extend total driving range.¹

If you want a one-line summary: electric drive first, onboard generation when you need extra distance.

1500 REV range-extended FAQ

Does the 1500 REV still plug in?

Yes—Ram’s 1500 REV page outlines home and public charging options and points to Free2move Charge solutions.¹

Will I still need gas sometimes?

With a range-extended setup, gas is there to help generate electricity when needed to extend total driving range.¹

Is it the same thing as the old “Ramcharger”?

Per Stellantis’ 2025 statement: the REEV pickup formerly called “Ramcharger” is being renamed to “Ram 1500 REV.”²

What range and capability numbers is Ram talking about?

Ram’s current page promotes projected 690 miles total range, plus capability targets like up to 14,000 lbs towing (when properly equipped) and 2,625 lbs payload.¹ (Final specs and real-world results can vary.)¹

Why do I still see pages that describe a battery-only REV?

Because earlier official materials and at least one Ram page still describe the original BEV plan and its targeted ranges—information that’s now out of sync with the renaming/cancellation statement.² ³ ⁴

Keeping up with the latest Ram 1500 REV details

The biggest challenge right now isn’t interest—it’s sorting the newest official info from older articles and lingering pages. If you want help tracking what’s current (and what’s outdated), the team at Nucar CDJR of Tilton is happy to talk through the latest updates as they’re released.

Everyone loves a Nucar!
